This Land is Our Home: Earth Day Reflections from an Organic Dorset Farm

AtĀ Primrose Organic Produce, we believe Earth Day isn’t just a date on the calendar — it’s at the heart of everything we do. As a small organic farm in Dorset, we’re committed to regenerative agriculture, ethical animal care, and restoring the land we work on. This week, we’re sharing how we farm with the planet in mind — and how your choices help shape a better food future.

What Earth Day Means to Us at Primrose

We don’t own this land — we belong to it.

Every crop we plant, every animal we raise, and every path we tread on our 90-acre farm is shaped by care, respect, and the desire to leave things better than we found them.

We believe in farming slowly, organically, and in tune with nature’s rhythms. Here’s how we honour the Earth, not just on Earth Day, but every day.

5 Ways We Farm for the Planet

1. Regenerative Grazing with our Red Devon Cattle

Our heritage Red Devon cattle are part of a rotational grazing system that builds healthy soil, stores carbon, and boosts biodiversity. They fertilise the ground naturally, and we give the fields time to recover — a key practice in regenerative farming.

2. Pasture-Raised Organic Chickens

Our free-ranging hens play an important role in our farm ecosystem. They fertilise, scratch, and peck their way across the orchard, helping to aerate the soil and reduce pests while laying delicious organic eggs.

3. No-Dig Organic Vegetables

Instead of tilling, we enrich our veg beds with our own compost from the cattle. No-dig farming protects soil life, reduces erosion, and captures carbon, making it better for our veggies and the planet.

4. Wild Spaces and Hedgerow Restoration

We’re restoring native hedgerows and leaving plenty of space for pollinators, songbirds, and small mammals. These untidy edges are vital to a thriving, balanced farm.

5. Farming with the Future in Mind

We’re not in a rush. We’re here for the long haul. Our goal is to grow food that sustains people and the ecosystem around us — season by season, seed by seed.
